When applying for scholarships, it's important to be aware of several key things before you get started:
- Make sure that the scholarship applies to you - most scholarships have specific criteria for application, which they usually list clearly somewhere on the application (e.g., must have earned at least two Advanced Placement credits, must be the child of a disabled veteran, etc.)
- Make sure you complete all application requirements and FOLLOW DIRECTIONS - provide all information requested (e.g., transcripts, letters of recommendation, etc.), use the format requested (e.g., some applications must be typed; this is usually specified in the instructions), follow directions on how to put the application together (e.g., some require items to be put in a specific order), provide as many copies as the application specifies (e.g., many scholarships will require more than one copy of the application because multiple committee members review them).
- Take your time when completing applications and organize your process (if applying for multiple scholarships) - so that you don't get overwhelmed and end up doing everything at the last minute.
- Make sure you turn in the applications ON TIME
